The sin of pride is one of the toughest sins because a person can commit it and really not know it. You know when you steal. You know when you lie or commit adultery. But you can be guilty of pride and confuse it with “feeling good about yourself” or “having a positive self-image.” Pride is when you start thinking every good thing in your life is a result of who you are and what you have done. It removes God from the equation. That’s why the Bible says: “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” (1 Peter 5:5)
In Daniel chapter 4, king (little k because there is only one true KING) Nebuchadnezzar was one who failed to realize his blessings came from the God of all creation. As such, he exalted himself thinking he was a god on earth. (As a side note, read Daniel chapter 4 for the full story). Through Nebuchadnezzar’s example, the sin of pride shows us what can happen when we are so enamored with ourselves that we think God’s universe revolves around us. Nebuchadnezzar learned God is able to humble those who walk in pride.
If we forget who has made our lives possible, we, like king Nebuchadnezzar we will be judged. Remember, any success we may experience in life comes from God; as a result, we must give Him honor.
