While there are some beautiful exceptions, much of the so-called love depicted in the media today is really just unsuppressed lust. In contrast, the Bible sets forth love as a divine perfection, exemplifying it in the declaration that “God is love” (1 John 4:8). This statement in 1 John implies that love is the very nature of God.
One of the most marvelous things about our relationship with God is that it truly is a conversation. We are not just here on earth worshiping the Creator who simply soaks up our love. Rather, He is so involved in our affection that He is actually in the center of it.
Zephaniah 3:17 says: “The Lord your God is among you, a warrior who saves. He will rejoice over you with gladness. He will bring quietness with His love. He will delight in you with shouts of joy.” I love this picture in Zephaniah which portrays our God as a mighty warrior fighting on behalf of those He loves.
One of the greatest attributes revealed in the pinnacle of God’s creation is love. He originally designed man to be like Himself, making man in His own image (Genesis 1:26). God’s intent was that our personalities reflect God’s character. This includes showing love for both God and other people. Does your life reflect the divine attribute of love?
“And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment. And the second, like it is this: You shall love your neighbor as your self. There is no other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31
